HISTORY MADE IN BAYELSA AS FIRST PLANE LANDS BAYELSA AIRPORT.

'I will not play politics with the Security, law and order, with development of our people and with the unity and dignity of the Ijaw people'.

These were the words of The Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State at his inauguration ceremony in 2012.

Having invested massively in security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, human capital development, to mention but a few, Governor Dickson has once again made history today as the first plane ever, an Air Peace 50 passenger Embraer jet, landed at the Bayelsa State Airport, built from scratch by the Dickson led Restoration Government.

In the governor's words, 'It take passion, vision and a courageous heart to attempt a feat like this. I came with a clear understanding of the needs of our people having begun from a humble background myself, it is only natural to serve the people'.

It was indeed an emotional moment today as many thronged into the airport to catch a glimpse at this 'wonder' with many literally  touching the plane as though confirming its materiality. You could feel the sense of pride in the crowd as they chanted 'Ofurumapepe'-our talknado governor.

Bayelsa women were not left out as they added colour with their beautiful traditional attires, dancing jubilantly to the melodious music produced by choice Bayelsa artists.

This however is not the commissioning ceremony. It is only a test flight which is procedural.

The governor stated that the construction of the airport cost about N60bn as opposed to some critics that alleged  it cost 120bn.

The governor also stated that the project was conceptualised, initiated and built from scratch by the Restoration government without any assistance from the Federal Government which meant that the land was acquired, compensations paid, land reclaimed solely by the Bayelsa State government because as we all know, the terrain in Bayelsa is peculiar.

Governor Dickson equally announced that the Sand filling alone is about 4m high.

In no distant time preceding this test flight, the commissioning will be announced at the appropriate time.

Bayelsa is now open to the world and the world is open to Bayelsa.

OPINION: Politicising Tragedy

The sad occurrence of the collapse of a 21 storey building in Lagos was a monumental disaster. Certainly the loss of more than 20 lives up to-date is a painful human tragedy. All attention must be focussed on what happened, why it happened and how can future occurrences be prevented all together!. Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, as usual of him, immediately rose to the occasion. Cut short his schedule official engagement in Rome and went to the venue straight from the airport. Even before his arrival the General Manager in charge was immediately sent on compulsory leave. Within 24hrs the governor has visited the site and the surviving victims about twice and a technical enquiry committee of capable and highly credible professionals has been put in place to unravel whatever happened and to advice government appropriately on issues including that of culpability, negligence and possible acts of criminality. It is widely reported that the number of floors constructed was far in exces...
