UNIPORT Alumni Felicitate With  Prof Georgewill  On His  Appointment As 9th V.C

The University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association has congratulated Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill, KSC, JP (B.Med. Sc., MBBS., MSc., MD., UPH) on his appointment as the substantive 9th Vice Chancellor of the prestigious University of Port Harcourt. It described his appointment as well-earned reward for hard work, consistency, dedication to duty with a track record of outstanding brilliance.

In a statement released today, its National President, Chris Adokeme, Esq. noted that the organisation is delighted with Professor Georgewill’s appointment, adding that he is an erudite scholar, an academic colossus, an achiever per excellence and a worthy alumnus of the university.

Adokeme stated that the country’s education sector is undoubtedly facing many challenges, such as inadequate funding and facilities, and stressed that Professor Georgewill’s appointment is a call to serve and help transform education, not only at the university but in the country by extension.

While insisting that Georgewill’s appointment would have a profound impact on the university, Adokeme stated that the alumni have implicit confidence in his ability to do this and more, especially since he is an alumnus of the university.
Listing out his educational qualifications, the statement pointed out that he has passed through the right training and grown through the ranks, which has adequately equipped him for his current position.

Professor Georgewill was born on 15th May, 1965 in Abonnema, in Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. He attended Bishop Crowder Memorial School, Abonnema between 1970 and 1976 and obtained a credit pass in the First School Leaving Certificate Examination. He then proceeded to the Nyemoni Grammar School, also in Abonnema, where he obtained his G.C.E “O” Level certificate in 1981, in flying colours.

His quest for higher education took him to the University of Port Harcourt to study Medicine.
In 1987, he graduated with Second Class Honours Upper Division, B.Med. Sc., degree in Pharmacology. His diligence and hardworking nature earned him the nickname “Prof” as early as his second year of undergraduate study.

In 1990, he obtained the MBBS degree of the University of Port Harcourt. He did his housemanship at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, before proceeding to Edo State for his one year National Youth Service Corps Scheme, as Medical Officer at the Specialist Hospital, Ossiomo.

In 1993, he commenced residency training in the Department of Internal Medicine, UPTH. In 1994 , he was employed as a Lecturer II in Pharmacology and was eventually promoted to the rank of a Professor of Pharmacology on May, 4, 2010, at age 44.

He also holds the MSc degree in Pharmacology and the MD degree of the University of Port Harcourt. Professor Owunari Georgewill has served the Department of Pharmacology, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, the College of Health Sciences, and the University of Port Harcourt in various capacities, including Examination Officer in the Department of Pharmacology. He supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Department.

He has served as Acting Head of Department, Pharmacology and Associate Dean of Students Affairs, member, Hostel Maintenance Committee, Students welfare committee, medical officer, Team Uniport, deputy Team Leader, Team Uniport at WAUG in Kumasi, Ghana and Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

He served as chairman, UDPS Governing Board.
In all these positions, he discharged his duties creditably.

The Alumni National President assured Prof. Georgewill of maximum support in the task of projecting the ideals of a Unique institution as the University of Port Harcourt. The Adokeme urged students of the university, all alumni worldwide as well as well-meaning Nigerians to give the new Vice Chancellor all the support he needs to transform the University of Port Harcourt into a world class institution.
