NOA BOSS TASK LGA ON GRASSROOT DEVELOPMENT

All over the world, local governments are saddled with responsibilities that make for the economic development of nations from the grassroots.

This was disclosed by the Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA) Dr Garba Abari at the ongoing Nigeria @60 ALGON Exhibition and Trade fair organized by Repsapphire Nigeria with the Theme "Nigeria’s Third Tier of Governance as the Stimulant for Cohesion Unity Economic Growth and Development". “From basic education to housing and planning, waste management, licensing, business support, tax collections and more Local Governments deliver value in facilitating the growth of any nation, he said.

Abari said that as the tier of government closest to the people, the Local Government feels the pulse of the people better and understands their yearnings more clearly than any other tier of government add that to the fact that local government areas consist of smaller communities, usually closely link by common language, customs, tradition, heritage and geographical realities and you will appreciate that the Local Government can leverage these commonalities to build bonds of affinity with and among the people.

"suffice it to say that in the concept of any multi-tier government system, it is from the operations of the Local Government that citizens largely interact with government in their daily contributions to their national growth and development".

“The Fourth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) recognizes the functions and centrality of Local Government Councils in national economic growth and development which included among others, the consideration and making of recommendations to the State Commission on economic planning for economic development of the state as well as participation in the Government of the State in economically potential matters such as agriculture and natural resources. “These provisions clearly set out the Local Government Council, being the third tier of government in Nigeria, as a catalyst for economic growth and development of the State and by extension, the nation.

The NOA chief, congratulated ALGON for the successful hosting of this event and wished them all a very rewarding outing.
